FreeFlow

Your voice,
everywhere.

Hold a key. Speak. Release. Your words land wherever your cursor is: ChatGPT, the terminal, your editor, email. Powered by Whisper, running entirely on your Mac.

$ curl -fsSL https://freeflow.bishesha.com/install.sh | bash
One line in Terminal. It builds on your Mac, so Gatekeeper never complains. Apple Silicon and Intel.

How it works

Three moves.
Zero ceremony.

No windows to open, no record buttons to find. FreeFlow waits invisibly until the moment you need it, then gets out of the way.

01

Hold

Press and hold Right ⌘ (or Right ⌥, F8, F9). Anywhere, in any app. The frosted pill fades in and starts listening.

⌘ Right Command
02

Speak

Talk naturally. Whisper runs on your GPU, and Apple Silicon gets the MLX engine. Say "new line" or "new paragraph" for real breaks.

03

Release

Your words appear at your cursor, punctuated and clean. FreeFlow never presses Return. Even in a terminal, nothing runs until you decide.

...and it lands right here
Privacy

Nothing you say ever leaves this Mac. Not audio, not text, not analytics. Not anything.

One network request, ever

The one-time model download from Hugging Face over HTTPS, checksum-verified. After that you could firewall FreeFlow entirely and dictation keeps working.

Engineered, not promised

Mic audio lives in memory only, while the key is held. Config is chmod 600. History is optional and local. The keyboard listener matches one key. It is not a keylogger.

Audit it in an afternoon

One Python file, three HTML windows, a real test suite. Search the source for "http" and you'll find exactly one download path. That's the whole audit.

The engine

Big-model accuracy,
sized for your exact Mac.

FreeFlow reads your chip and RAM, then recommends the strongest Whisper build your machine will love. Swap any time in Settings. Downloads happen once.

Recommended · M-series

Large-v3 Turbo · 4-bit

0.46 GB · MLX on your GPU

Big-model accuracy in a lightweight footprint. The default pick on Apple Silicon. Instant-on after the first load.

Large-v3 Turbo

1.6 GB · best accuracy-to-speed

The full-fat turbo. Choose it on 16 GB+ machines when every last word-error-rate point matters.

Large-v3

3.1 GB · maximum accuracy

The reference Whisper. Slower, thorough. For transcribing files rather than firing off messages.

Plus Distil, Medium, Small, Base and Tiny. The ladder runs 0.07 GB to 3.1 GB. Custom Vocabulary teaches it your names and jargon, and FreeFlow filters Whisper's classic silence-hallucinations so noise never types "Thanks for watching!" into your doc.

Details that add up

Feels native,
because it is.

🎛
Menu-bar presence

A quiet waveform icon: start, settings, history, quit. Always reachable, never in the way.

👻
Invisible until needed

The pill hides when idle, and becomes click-through so it can never steal a click.

📚
Custom vocabulary

Your product names, your jargon, spelled right. Verified: it taught Whisper to spell FreeFlow itself.

⏎
Never presses Return

Dictate into a terminal fearlessly. Text waits at the prompt until you decide.

🗣
Voice commands

"New line" and "new paragraph" become real breaks. Dictate structure, not just words.

🧠
Hallucination filter

Whisper's ghost phrases on silence are caught and dropped, never pasted.

🎨
Yours to style

Orb, pill or bar. Frosted, light or dark. Accent colors, size, position, opacity.

📜
Local history

Optional plain-text transcript log in ~/.freeflow. Grep it, or turn it off entirely.

Install

Two minutes
to first words.

Pick your path. All three end in the same guided onboarding that sorts permissions, downloads your model, and gets your first dictation flowing.

One line in Terminal Recommended

Downloads the source and builds FreeFlow.app on your Mac, which is why macOS never shows the "unidentified developer" dialog. Links it into Applications and launches onboarding.

curl -fsSL https://freeflow.bishesha.com/install.sh | bash
Read the script first →

Download the zip

Grab the source, unzip, run bash install_mac.sh, then double-click FreeFlow.app. Windows and Linux installers ship in the same zip.

Prebuilt app (DMG)

A fully self-contained FreeFlow.app, no Python needed. Built in public CI for Apple Silicon and Intel. First open: right-click, then Open (not yet Apple-notarized).

macOS 12+. FreeFlow asks for three permissions: Microphone, Input Monitoring, Accessibility. Onboarding explains exactly why each exists, then verifies them for real. Uninstall with bash uninstall.sh. No daemons, no leftovers.

Questions

Fair questions,
straight answers.

Why does macOS ask for three permissions?+
Microphone: to hear you, only while the key is held. Input Monitoring: to notice your hotkey while other apps have focus. Accessibility: to press ⌘V for you so text lands at your cursor. Onboarding has one-click buttons for each and verifies them for real. That's the complete list, and each one is inspectable in the source.
How accurate is it?+
Large-v3 Turbo territory: the same model class behind the best cloud dictation, running locally. Pin your language, add your names to Vocabulary, and it gets eerily good. FreeFlow also filters Whisper's famous silence-hallucinations and collapses decoder loops, so noise never becomes text.
Does it work offline?+
Yes. After the one-time model download, FreeFlow needs zero network. Firewall it if you like. Dictation keeps working. That's the point.
Why isn't the download Apple-notarized?+
Notarization requires a paid Apple Developer account. Until then: the one-line installer builds the app on your machine, so there is nothing for Gatekeeper to distrust and no dialogs at all. The prebuilt DMG needs one right-click, then Open, once. Everything is open source and built in public CI, so you can verify rather than trust.
Windows or Linux?+
Both live in the same zip: install_windows.bat / install_linux.sh, faster-whisper engine, CUDA auto-detected, Right Ctrl as the default hotkey. The Mac build is the most polished today.
Where does my data live?+
Audio: memory only, discarded after transcription. Settings: ~/.freeflow/config.json with owner-only permissions. History: optional local plain text you can clear or disable. Models: ~/.cache/huggingface. Read SECURITY.md for the full map.

The fastest way to type
was never typing.
